Ellen Shaw, CrossFit TTG April 2018 Athlete of the Month! 

  1. What made you start CrossFit? 

I started CrossFit because I wanted to lose weight and get in shape. I was tired of feeling like crap about myself. I had a membership at Planet Fitness and was super unmotivated to go and workout by myself.

  1. What is one thing most people don’t know about you?­

Some of my closest friends already know this, but I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes back in 2013. Type 1 diabetes is a FULL TIME JOB with no days off. Since starting CrossFit I have become more aware of what’s going on with my body and what it’s telling me. I am always happy to educate people on this disease, so if you have any questions feel free to ask!

Something else most people don’t know is that I grew up competitively riding horses up until about 3 years ago. Before having to put riding on the back burner for a little while I earned my USDF bronze medal which was an amazing life achievement.

  1. What is your one favorite and least favorite movement in CrossFit?­

Favorite movement: 

Double unders, power cleans, pull ups, and running(more than 400 meters)

Least Favorite:

Inch worms, wall walks, and thrusters!!!

  1. What is your ultimate cheat meal?­

Before being diagnosed with T1D my ultimate cheat meal was a plate of spaghetti and meatballs and some kind of delicious ice cream.

Now I splurge with extra cheese and double meat at Chipotle for a cheat meal!

  1. Since starting CrossFit, What is your biggest/proudest accomplishment?­

My biggest accomplishment since starting at TTG would have to be getting pull ups. And then stringing together sets of 5-6 pull ups. I tried for so long and thought I would never be able to graduate from a purple band. 2 years later here I am.
